The Big Sister Skort

Today I am doing a flip on the Paneled Playsuit Pattern by Designs by Call Ajaire. Before I get into the nitty gritty of my flip first let me tell you about amazingness (I know you have missed me and how I am always making up words) of this pattern. I was going to test but I fell short on time due to the complications of our new baby's health at the time of his birth. I am so glad that Ajaire let me redeem myself by sewing up one for you today.
Now it won't do your dishes and it won't vacuum your floors; but it does have two skirt lengths, a pant, a short, a top and then the ability to combine the top with any skirt or pant option. Word is on the street that Ajaire is also testing a sleeve add-on for this pattern. I think with the number of options and sizes (newborn to 12) this might be one of the most option heavy patterns in blog land.
There is currently a 15% discount during the tour; from August 24th through September 4th on Paneled Sunsuit pattern. Anyone that joins the Designs by Call Ajaire Facebook group will have access to a coupon code for an extra 5% off (so a total of 20% off).
I chose to make a skort for Miss Boston. She has received many commercially made hand-me downs skorts from her cousin Ty, that she had loved running around the neighborhood in. I took a page from the construction of those skorts.
The skirt portion is made out of a mid-weight cotton suiting and the shorts underneath is made from a cotton jersey. It was a quick modification and I was amazed how quickly it came together.
I sewed up the skirt with hem (except the waistband). Then I sewed up the shorts with hem (except the waistband). I then stitched to the two together by dropping the shorts into the inside of the skirt and stitching around the upper edge. Then I just stitched the elastic directly to the skort and then rolled it over to make a mock casing. I stitched the elastic down with a double row of stitching. Presto a skort ready to take on the neighborhood.
I am calling this the big sister skort because Ryder is in kindergarten this year and she is nervous about being without him. We have been trying to redirect her attention from him being gone to that she finally gets to be the big sister helping me with the baby. She has done pretty good with this redirection until yesterday when it was time to drop off Ryder. She was pretty upset that he was going to be gone and she would have no one to play with. By the time pick up had come she was happy to realize that it wasn't going to be forever and being the big sister at home is an alright gig.
Last night as we were changing clothes for bed she was reluctant to take off the skort because she wanted to wear them tomorrow. I dropped them into the wash so they will be ready to go for today. Sometimes sewing is a cross between total utilitarian and artistry, but in this case it was something more. It was the uniform that gave her faith that she was going to be okay on a pretty tough day.

  1. I love that suiting fabric! The color is so pretty and it would look amazing in pants or shorts too. Thanks for showing the skort option cause we all love privacy shorts. I keep meaning to add a pair to Bean's, but never remember until after the waist is sewn :) Thanks so much for joining us!!
